EDGE OF THE ICE
One of the more curious screenings in the National
program was a genre-defying montage by Andrew Vial,
titled Edge of the Ice.
Promoted as: 'eroticism
within the sporting metaphor of endurance snowmobile
racing in the arctic wilderness of Lapland', it made
this reviewer curious, swivelling the heads of
viewers with its uncut juxtapositions of snow
racing, sexy sauna scenes and sonorous metaphysical
voice-overs. One uncut scene demonstrated the
freedoms that, thankfully, still prevail in regard
to classification exemptions for festivals. The film–maker's
intention, ironic or not, remained unclear.
